手板模型亦称首板，即产品的首个样板。早在七十年代香港开始有手板兴起，因早时都用手工制作为主，因而得名曰"手板"，其实叫首板更为准确。九十年代后期，特别是近几年，我国经济突飞猛进，工业设计的兴起，手板业开始兴起。手板虽小，作用却非常大，一是体现设计思维，二是展览会展示，三是检验模具结构。
